Build a
Sandpit

In Ground Sand Pit

The sand pit is best made from 2.1m long Macrocarpa sleepers, if space is tight however 1.2m sleepers can be used. These and all other required materials are available from Loaders Landscape Supplies.

Materials required:

4x Macrocarpa Sleepers
Weedmat
White Sand

Tools required:

Spade
Shovel
Hammer & nails
Sharp knife

1. Dig a square hole around 500mm deep, with sides that are 200mm shorter than the length of your sleepers.

2. Dig a larger square “shelf” around the top of your hole around 100mm deep with sides that are 200mm longer than the length of your sleepers

3. Line the entire hole with weedmat as shown below – this will prevent the soil from mixing with the sand while allowing water to pass through.

(Tip: you can use the excavated soil to create a veggie garden, or fill some holes in your yard, or you can dump it at Loaders Landscape Supplies – free of charge)

4. Lay your sleepers down using the pattern shown below. Although the sleepers will stay in place on their own, it is best to skew-nail the corners with galvanized nails (see below*)

5. To finish – fill the hole with white sand to half way up the sleeper (50mm from the top)
