When ordering product it is important to know the area that is to be covered, or filled, so that our staff can accurately advise the recommended quantity.
This is a simple task when the area is a rectangle; it is simply a matter of measuring the sides with a tape measure then multiplying one side by the other.
Using rectangle A in the example below this would be 8 x 4 = 32m2
A good method of establishing the area of a more complex shape is to approximate all areas as rectangles. In the example below the shape has been approximated to two rectangles A and B. it is simply a matter then of adding the two areas together. 8 x 4 = 32m2, plus, 4 x 2 = 8m2.
This gives us a total area of 40m2. Although this is a rough way of estimating an area, it is usually more than accurate enough when ordering bulk products for landscaping projects.

complex shapes
The examples below show other ways of approximating the rectangle area of more complex shapes.

Volume
To calculate the volume of product required it is a simple task of multiplying the area being covered by the depth the product is to be applied. Where many people make a mistake is to use different units of measure when they calculate volume, make sure all the measurements are in metres before multiplying the values together. In the example below we have used our garden area calculation from above and applied 50mm of bark to it. The important step is to convert 50mm to 0.05m and calculate as follows:
40 x 0.05 = 2m3
