I D Loader Ltd is a 3rd generation family business involved with civil engineering.
The business was started in Wanganui by Ian Loader (snr) in 1954 and was predominantly based around bulldozer work for the local district. I D Loader Ltd was formed as a company in 1963 and, other than a few years working from a large back yard at home, has been based at 172 Ridgway Street (Cnr of Hatrick and Ridgway) in Wanganui. The ownership of the company has changed through the generations and is now owned by three of Ian Loader (snr)’s grandsons – Hayden and Matthew who are Ian (jnr)’s sons and Justin who is Allan’s son.
We carry out most of our work for local authorities. Whanganui District Council is our main source of work but we do a fair amount for the Rangitikei and Manawatu District Councils as well. We also work as a subcontractor on bigger projects for contractors including Downer and Higgins. Our clients also include NZTA, several commercial and residential builders and the residents of Wanganui.
While deep drainage and roading is core to what we do we are also involved in water reticulation, building site works, retaining walls, subdivision development, aggregate supply, machinery transport, traffic management, hydro excavation, forestry roading and machine hire.
Two recent projects of note are the 4 years we spent in Christchurch rebuilding sewer networks through the SCIRT alliance following the devastating earthquakes, and the rebuilding of a section of a major retaining wall on Anzac Parade Wanganui. The section of wall was washed away during a flood in 2015 affecting a section of state highway 4. The cost of the rebuild was $9m.
We employ 60 staff at present who are all highly skilled in their various jobs. We have a good mix of young talent and those that have several years of experience. We are very proud of our retention rate with a number of staff having been here for 20 years and some over 30.
